Objects do come with their own context, but placing them in a new context liberates new meanings. Naval picks his objects with this in mind. Used baby pacifiers, miniature furniture, cat toys of all sorts, children`s playing cards, small hemispheres of varying material and color... These are some of the objects you might see in a Naval show. They are mostly recognizable, yet they are in stark contrast to the environments they pop up in: beautiful vistas of Northern California, back alleys of Budapest, old war monuments on the cliffs of New Jersey, or under a highway trestle on the Lower East Side of New York City.
