[Texte disponible uniquement en anglais] Barb

'Barb' is an Arts project that explores the possibilities of combining projection mapping with drawing and music. It consists of a micromapping projected onto a drawing made with photo reactive ink. The mapping was conceived specifically for this drawing just as the drawing was made to be revealed and animated by the projection mapped over it. The title of the project comes from its soundtrack, ‘Barb’, by Canadian musician Phil Western, as a way to mark how essential the music is to this project. ‘Barb’ could be defined as an immersive videoclip projected onto a physical drawing, presented inside an independent structure holding one visitor at a time. This structure, decorated and illuminated to attract attention, invites us to sit comfortably inside it and, upon pressing play, engage on a tête à tête with Barb. Thus we can experience the work in private, intimately, in a very different setting from traditional 2D Art exhibition formats.
Projection mapping allows the work to expand beyond the frame, and the illusion of movement can be conveyed with precision. The interplay between the solidity of the physical drawing and the ethereal nature of projection is also an important part of the piece.

The drawing, also called ‘Barb’, shows a face locking eyes with the observer, executed using a technique not unlike punctillism. The projection is mapped on and around this face, slowly revealing the drawing, then transforming it with different shades and shapes of colour, and finally growing past the edges of the drawing to reveal a new layer of meaning, always in communion with the ebbs and flows of the music.
